McPherson Humane Society

The McPherson Humane Society is a great place to go if you are wanting to adopt a cat, or if you are just wanting to go pet some for a bit.

In 2016, they took in 136 cats throughout the year and 113 of them got adopted. 2 of those cats were returned to their owners, and 13 cats died.  It is a no kill shelter, so they were either sick or too tiny to live.  In 2017 through November, they have taken in 88 cats and there have been 110 cats adopted so far.  4 cats have been returned to their owner, and, less than last time, only 7 cats died while at the humane society.

Lauren Grieb, senior, volunteers at the McPherson Humane Society during her free time.  “I started going there and petting the cats at the beginning of my junior year because I wasn’t 18 yet so I couldn’t volunteer,”  she said, “And now I have been legally volunteering since the beginning of my senior year.”   She has adopted 2 cats through the humane society.

You must be 18 years or older in order to volunteer at the McPherson County Humane society; and if you aren’t, you must be accompanied by an adult.  Many volunteers for the humane society foster cats and dogs.  An employee explains that you must fill out an application in order to become a foster home for a cat or dog.  They have fundraisers every year to make money, memorial donations, and they also apply for grants.

Volunteering there benefits both you and the cats, as Grieb says “I really enjoy cats and seeing them happy makes me happy.”
