Deluge is a local McPherson Band. Specializing in Psychedelic Jazz Rock, they’ve been on a comeuppance as of recently. But behind that all is one of the co-founders of the band, Lisandro Gomez.
Gomez didn’t grow up in the music world. He grew up playing soccer, rather than anything music related. In his second year of college, he shelled out enough money and started taking drum lessons. “Growing up, I had always wanted to be a drummer, but it never happened,” Gomez said. In his last year of college, he got more time and a more manageable schedule.
With this new found freedom, Gomez questioned what to even do with his musical talent. “I’d known for a long time that I wanted to start a band, this seemed like a good time.” Gomez said. He gathered up a guitarist, a singer, and more. The lineup of the original five-six people stayed only for a little while. Being what he calls a “short and sweet chapter.”
In the summer of 2024, he found another local band he liked, Robby and the J Dawgs. They were a fellow jazz band, so it was only natural Gomez wanted to check them out. He was very impressed with two members in particular, aerophonist R.J. McDonald, and bassist Reeve Mai. “It was the 4th of July, I was just eating dinner,” Deluge Bassist Reeve Mai said. “He texted me up, said that they needed a bassist since the last one left. I said sure thing, man.” The band added R.J. soon after, he had a “crazy instrument called an Aerophone that can get all types of sounds and noises.” Gomez said.
The band has since seen its fair share of success, performing at places such as Lakeside or the American Legion. Gomez doesn’t just like music performance because it’s fun, but he loved the message being spread around by his favorite bands. “It was super inspiring to listen to great music, and watch them spread a message of love, expressiveness, and community.” Gomez said. He saw the impact he could have, and it pushed him even further into music.
Gomez has had his fair share of struggles too. Until recently, he’s been working two jobs just to stay afloat. As well as the band changing members frequently, and having to balance practice and shows with an already busy life. But he didn’t quit, he worked hard to keep the band going.
Life as of recent, though, has been good. He just recently moved into a new house with Deluge singer and his girlfriend Cloey. “Life feels really good right now. I look forward to growing my relationships with Cloey, my awesome beautiful friends, and any new things that may come.” Gomez said in a heartfelt statement.
In the future, Gomez hopes to keep the band going. He recently bought a bunch of studio equipment, and is looking forward to learning how to record and produce. “I feel very fortunate to have met all these great people and be able to play music with them. Hopefully we can get some shows going for 2026.” Gomez said. He said that no matter what happens, music will still play a part in his life.
