Many students spend their summer days finding ways to make a little extra cash. Jobs help teach students responsibility and help them become more independent. Places like Ace Hardware, Slim Chickens, Hopp’s Sno Shack, and Pizza Hut here in McPherson are hiring students for summer jobs.
Whether it’s working at a hardware store, fast food restaurant, babysitting, or helping out with a family business, students find ways to improve themselves and help their community.
Freshman, Adeline Kramer, spends her summer days working at Dohrman Custom Cabinetry. “I help out with customers and help clean around the shop,” said Kramer.
Having a job teaches students responsibility, time management, and social skills. These skills help better students and get them ready for their future.
“My job has taught me how to be mature and how to hold conversations with strangers and customers,” says Kramer.
Jobs also teach students how to be accountable and responsible for their actions. They trade late nights and sleeping in for waking up early and getting to work on time.
“I used to stay up late, and sleep in, now I have to plan ahead so I am ready for work in the morning,” said Kramer.
High schoolers aren’t the only students with summer jobs. 12-year-old, Maddox Cullinane, helps out on the family owned business “Schrag Farms”.
Maddox sacrifices time with friends and family and spends long days on the farm. “I usually get to work around 8 a.m. and get home around 10 p.m. or so, some days it can be earlier or later than that,” says Cullinane.
From small jobs to big jobs with a lot of responsibility he always stays busy. “I drive the combine most days, if we aren’t in the field I do smaller jobs like cleaning machinery and mowing around the farm,” says Cullinane.
Jobs like these that have a lot of responsibility teach kids how to be aware and how to stay calm under pressure.
“I have to have responsibility because I have to show up on time and I have to be very aware when I am operating big machinery,” says Cullinane. “When driving the combine I have to make sure the header is running right, grain is coming in the bin, stay in line with the rows of the field, and unload onto the grain cart.”
If you are looking for a job this summer you can apply to Pizza Hut and Slim Chickens by filling out an online application for the role you are interested in. The best way to apply to Ace Hardware and Hopp’s Sno Shack is to go in person and ask for an application. Summer jobs offer way more than just money. Jobs give students a sense of ownership and give them a glimpse into the real world.
