This year at McPherson High School, the students in sports had big adjustments to make.  McPherson High School has been in division 4a for a long time. The division groups what schools will be playing who. The schools with a similar amount of students will play against each other in all competitions including sports, orchestra, band, etc.  MHS has been placed in division 5a due to four more students enrolled. This will mean students will be up against bigger schools and harder competitions.

Students are excited for the new, upcoming competitions.  Zoey Whorton, volleyball player and Freshman at MHS said, “We had to learn a lot of new line ups because the stuff we were running wouldn’t cut it for 5a competitions.   The competition is a lot harder in 5a and now we actually have competition because, we were winning almost every single game.” The staff are as equally excited as the student.  Shane Backhus, Assistant Principal and Activities Director said, “We anticipated the change to 5a and we have no issue with it, we are actually very excited about it.” For some students, the switch to 5a didn’t have much of an impact. Jessie James, Sophomore at MHS and orchestra student says “Us being switched to 5a really didn’t change anything.”
