It’s a new year for the McPherson High School band. Directors of the band are Kyle Unruh and Austin Russell. They’ve started working on their new show called Chronometry. This theme has to do with the concepts of time. It’s a fast-paced and exciting show.

The band has already performed at the fall preview and the first home football game on September 18th. There is another home game performance coming up on September 21st at where they will be adding the second movement to their show. On September 21st, the seventh and eighth grade bands from the middle school joined in to perform the school song along with the high schoolers.

You might have noticed students marching in the high school parking lot early in the mornings. They’re rehearsing for their future shows. While the band performs at our home football games, they also work hard for their competitions. A change has been made to the schedule this year. Instead of going to Emporia State University to perform, they will travel to Baker University on October 10th. On October 6th, the band will be going to the Central States Marching Festival at K-State University again this year. There is no specific reason for the change. The directors said they just want to do something new.

The band had lost a few seniors in a lot of the instrument sections and gained a lot of freshmen overall this year. The color guard are still performing with the band like always. There are two drum majors for their show instead of three. There’s a lot of changes this year and some upperclassmen have mixed feelings. Sydney Myers, a junior in the clarinet section, shared how she feels about the preparation for competitions. “I feel like we aren’t very prepared at all and that we’ll be rushing to finish the show. I’m worried it’s not going to look good when competition comes around and we won’t get the results we want.”
