MCPHERSON, Kan. – This year’s All School’s Day celebration brought something you don’t see every day in McPherson. Camel rides from Tanganyika Wildlife Park, based in Wichita, drew a steady crowd near Oak and Marlin, right across from Linnea Park. I decided to check out the attraction and see what all the excitement was about.
After buying a ticket, I joined a line of other curious visitors waiting for their turn. The handlers from Tanganyika were friendly and made sure each rider felt safe getting on the camels. Up close, the camels were bigger than I expected but calm and used to being around people and the crowds.
The ride was a short loop that lasted just a few minutes, but it offered a unique view of the festival from higher up. Parents took photos and kids waved, it turned an ordinary corner of McPherson into something memorable. Tickets were $1o per rider or $38 for a group of four, which may seem a bit pricey, but for many the experience was worth the price.
Tanganyika Wildlife Park was founded by Jim Fouts and is still operated by the Fouts family today. They are known for bringing unique animal experiences to communities across Kansas, not just McPherson. Their Camels are well cared for and used to attending large public events, which made the ride fun and safe for everyone.
Overall the Camel rides were a memorable addition to All Schools Day. For anyone looking to try something out of the ordinary, It was a unique highlight that’s likely to be remembered for years to come.
