McPherson High School girls’ golf qualified to attend the state tournament on Oct. 20-21 at Carey Park Golf Course in Hutchinson, KS. The girls placed third overall for the second time in a row, with seniors Brodie Kuhn and Andi Buschbom both placing in the top 20.
Kuhn finished third individually, earning the best individual finish in school history. “It was a great way to end my high school career as a golfer, and I hope the high school team continues to progress,” said Kuhn.
“A lot of preparation went into getting ready for state,” said head coach Treg Fawl. The girls had played two previous tournaments at Carey Park earlier in the season giving them valuable experience on the course.
The girls also practiced at Carey park a couple of times leading up to state allowing them to get even more comfortable with the course. “We also had detailed notes on what to hit off the tee, where to aim, and the best places to miss around the greens. This preparation helped the girls feel confident and ready to compete,” said Fawl.
The whole team played a huge role in contributing to the third place finish at state. Not only was it led by the two seniors, Kuhn and Buschbom, but many underclassmen also made a big impact. Fawl highlighted juniors, Amelia Moody and Pera Bauer and freshman, Lleyton Kuhn for their standout performances.
Coach Fawl has created a successful program in only four years. “Our goal for next season is to return to the state tournament and make it to day two as a team. With the experience and confidence this group has gained, we’re excited about what’s ahead,” said Fawl.
