MCPHERSON, KS. – On Friday, April 24, 2026, The McPherson High School baseball team hosted a Varsity Quad at the Grant Sports Complex. The event was also going on during “Youth Night” where youth players in attendance wore their Bullpup jerseys. During the quad, the Bullpups brought home two astonishing wins.
Game 1, McPherson defeated Lyons 9-2 with a huge 3-0 lead in the third inning. Lyons fought back scoring single runs in the 4th and 5th innings making it a close game at 3-2. Pulling away, the Bullpups in the 6th inning scored six runs to secure the 9-2 victory. Junior Cru Buchman earned the win in the first game, delivering a solid performance with 8 strikeouts.
In Game 2, McPherson run-ruled Rock Creek in a dominant 10-0 victory. Senior Cade Strathman swept the field, throwing a 5 inning no hitter. He needed only 52 pitches to complete the 5 inning game. Heath Gerstner, head of the MHS baseball team said, “Strathman has logged a lot of innings and put in a lot of time. He is one of our best competitors with a fast ball that can get up to mid 80’s.”
The Bullpups had an almost perfect game with only two base runners. One on a dropped third strike and one on an error. Gerstner said, “The offense has been sparked a lot by a little bunting and slashing that puts pressure on defenses.”
The Bullpups’ offense was just as sharp as their defense with every starter except one recording a hit. This win helped improve McPherson’s score to a 14-4 record. This marks their fifth straight victory.
Despite the Bullpups dominance in the varsity quad, Coach Gerstner remains focused on the road ahead and says, “In Baseball the game before doesn’t matter. If you get cocky, you will get humbled real quick. We will be working to improve and hopefully find a way to scratch and claw our way to a state tournament.”
