Springing into sports

The arrival of Spring not only brings the promise of warmer weather and blooming flowers but also the start of Spring sports. McPherson High School has a variety of Spring sports including girls´ swimming, baseball, softball, girls’ tennis, girls’ soccer, track, and boys´ golf.

 

Girls Swimming is coached by Angie Brunk and Emma Eels. Junior Gracy Hubbard explained ¨My favorite part about swimming is watching other girls on the team grow and do well.¨ Hubbard who has been to state twice before, hopes that this year she will be able to qualify in two different events. Their first meet is on March 21 in Topeka. 

 

This year’s boy’s baseball team is led by Coach Heath Gerstner along with assistant coaches Skylar Hill, Peyton Wingert, and Matthew McCasland. Last two years the boys have had a victorious season, winning state back to back. They hope to have another successful season. Their first game is on April 19 at Chanute. 

 

Danica Ftizmorris and Brian Guffey coach the girl’s softball team. Freshman Kennedy Huggard stated ¨All of the girls on the team have been very kind and supportive of me. I feel like our team has outstanding leadership this year.¨ Their first game is on April 21 against Buhler.

 

The boy´s tennis team is coached by Ricardo Sanchez and Tyler Brown. Junior Bryson Archer stated¨I am most excited to get to play tennis with my friends, especially my doubles partner. My goal this year is to try and get 4th place at state.¨ Their first meet is March 26, where they will play at a home invitational.

Chris Adrian and Coach Bowen coach the girl’s soccer team. Junior Naomi Vesser said ¨I am most excited this season to get to play with friends who go to Elyria.¨ A new KSHAA rule passed this year that allows students to play sports for a different school in their district if their school does not offer that sport. Vesser explains ¨ I am also a little anxious to see how we will all play and work together on and off the field.¨

 

The track team this year is coached by Jace Pavlovich, John Montgomery, Chet Harlin, Brandt Busse, Nikolous Rempe, and Richard Miller. Senior Mallory Holmes explained ¨I love going to track meets and getting to do many different events. My goal this year is to PR in all of my events.¨ Their first track meet is on March 28. 

 

The boy’s golf team is coached by Treg Fawl and Kurt Kinnamon. The team gets to practice and host their tournaments at Turkey Creek Golf Course. Their first tournament will be on April 1 at Eldorado Praire Trails golf course.
