On Nov. 14, Ice Spice—commonly known for her part in “Boy’s A Liar”— released a revolutionary new song, “Big Guy”. “Big Guy” is in collaboration with SpongeBob’s upcoming December movie, The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants.
“Big Guy” is quite the controversial song due to people’s varying opinions.
Some think the song makes no sense and is generally bad. I, a music connoisseur, disagree.
First and foremost, the new SpongeBob movie revolves around SpongeBob trying to prove to Mr. Krabs his bravery and worth by following a ghost pirate to the depths of the ocean.
This explains the most confusing line, the chorus:
“Big guy, big guy, big, big guy, big guy
SpongeBob, big guy pants, okay (grrah)
SpongeBob, big guy pants, okay (grrah)
Big guy, big guy, big, big guy, big guy, grrah
SpongeBob, big guy pants, okay (grrah)
SpongeBob, big guy pants, okay,”
Many don’t realize that by saying “SpongeBob big guy pants,” Miss Ice Spice is hyping SpongeBob up by calling him a big guy instead of a mere square. To clarify: SpongeBob-big guy-pants, okay!
I personally think this is very sweet of Ice Spice as SpongeBob seems to have self-esteem issues, hence the plot of the movie. Also, the particular scene the song plays in features an excited SpongeBob finally allowed onto a rollercoaster. Her hyping can also point to him now being big enough for the fun rollercoaster.
Controversially, here are my top three favorite lines of the song with explanations.
1. “I blow bubbles so big like Mrs. Puff,”
I strongly recommend everyone to listen to the song to fully understand the power this single lyric holds. I applaud Ice Spice for the way she says it; it simply rolls off her tongue,
2. “The baddest, the top of the list I am,”
Again, the way she says this is satisfying, which goes for every single bar in the song.
I also like the confidence this line has, for both SpongeBob Big Guy Pants and Ice Spice.
3. “With my bestie like everything fun,”
I really enjoy this since she says it with such a joyful cadence. It is also incredibly truthful, like yes, everything is fun with your bestie.
Even as an established teenager, I have added it to my everyday music playlist. I would surely have loved to hear this song as a child, and would have made my parents overplay it to the point it gets banished from my household entirely. I give “Big Guy” a whopping 10/10, A+
