May Fete Royalty

On Tuesday, January 12th, the senior class began voting for this year’s May Fete Royalty. An email was sent out by the class sponsor, Erica Shook, that let students vote on an online form.
“I was excited when I found out that I would be considered for May Fete Royalty,” said Alayna Wallace, a senior, “I am honored to be a nominee, as all of the other nominees are such fantastic people.”
There were five girls and five boys nominated by MHS teachers. Rachel Ivers, Alayna Wallace, Gretchen Heidebrecht, Rachel Dossett, and Emma Ellet were nominated for May Fete Queen, while Caleb Houghton, Jeffrey Reed, Thomas Smith, Michael Saverino, and Trey Hett were nominated for May Fete King.
“It really means a lot to me,” said Heidebrecht, “And it’s nice to know that teachers and students think highly of you.”
On January 17th, at the end of the school day, it was announced that Rachel Dossett and Thomas Smith were the officially May Fete Royalty for this year.
“I was honored that I was nominated, and then I was shocked when found out that I won,” said Smith, “It will be an adventure building the float, and getting everything prepared.”
“I had gotten a text from one of my friends saying I was nominated for May Fete,” said Dossett, “I immediately checked my email to see who the other candidates were. When I saw my name I was so excited!” she continued, “I was counting down the days until they announced the winner.”
The May Fete Queen and King will be riding on the McPherson float at the All Schools’ Day Parade in May.
“I think this group whole group of people are all extremely deserving of being nominated, and whoever wins will wear the crowns well,” said Ellet, a nominee, “It is an honor to be nominated, and win or lose, I will be so ecstatic!” she finished.
May Fete Royalty will be constructing the float themselves, and the flower girl and crown bearer will join them in the parade.
“I think it’s really cool how the teachers pick the candidates for May Fete and so to be picked among 170 students by my teachers was a really awesome feeling,” said Ivers, “I felt a bit honored actually.”
The nominees were happy to be nominated, and most expressed excitement at the final results.
“Yeah, I mean it would’ve been awesome to win,” said Ivers, “but it was a close call between all of us and, I’m happy for Rachel and Thomas, of course!”
In some cases, nominees voiced their doubt when they discovered they had been nominated.
“I was honestly surprised to be nominated,” said Houghton, “ generally I see myself as being a pain in the- for lack of a better word- butt for teachers,” he said jokingly.
With everyone in good spirits from the friendly competition, it makes May Fete seem even closer than before.
“I’m excited for all the festivities of May Fete and all schools day,” said Smith.
“I told my mom and dad and they are very excited, as well as grandparents and friends,” said Dossett, “I can’t wait until I get to wear a crown on my head and wave to everyone on May Day!”
