Many of McPherson High School’s clubs participated in preparing and serving a meal to the McPherson’s first responders and their families. The meal, which consisted of lasagna, garlic bread, salad, and donated Freddy’s Frozen Custard was served in the AC of the high school Tuesday, November 15.

Todd Martens, Administrative Captain with the Police Department for 29 years, attended the dinner with his family.

“I am always grateful when the community does something like this for the officers,” Martens said, “It shows how much the community cares. It also shows a person what a great community we do live in, and that students will take time out of their busy schedules to host such an event.”

National Honors Society, KAY’s Club, and FCCLA members, along with any student willing to help, were invited to help prepare and serve the meal.

Julie Diepenbrock, sponsor of FCCLA, helped serve with her club’s members.

“Preparing and serving a meal for the EMS, firefighters, and police department was a great opportunity,” Diepenbrock said. “They do so much for our community, and we want them to know how much we appreciate them.”

Although this was the first dinner at MHS to honor McPherson’s first responders, it is hoped that it won’t be the last. Many agreed that a first responders dinner needs to become an annual tradition.

“I had a very nice time,” Martens said, “The students were very appreciative of the responders being there and they would come around to the tables always asking if we needed anything. I thought it was great the students would do something like this.”
