Prom at Perkins

Prom at Perkins

McPherson High School prom, which has previously been held in The Roundhouse of MHS, will be held at Perkins this year. The decision for the off-site prom was made by Junior class sponsors, Shanda Swanson and Megan Nieman.

Before principal Brad Plackemeier came to MHS, the suggestion to have prom away from the roundhouse was brought up many times, but it was always voted down. However, this year the idea of an off campus prom was taken more seriously.

To get opinions and preferences, a survey was sent out to parents via email. The majority of the vote was to move prom off campus.

“I’ve worked at schools where they had prom off campus and it worked out great,” Plackemeier said. “It doesn’t matter to me where prom is. I’ll go where everybody else does, as long as it is not in the rain, or 90 degrees out,” Plackemeier jokingly remarked, “I’ll show up, but I don’t plan on dancing.”

Not having prom at The Roundhouse will have its benefits, and may open up more design possibilities than before. Previous tradition decorations have posed a fire hazard, and were discontinued in the last few years.

“Although I’ve only worked here during one prom so far, I know they used to be able to put tons of decorations up. Last year they were told they couldn’t put the ones up that they used to because the fire marshal told them not to,” Plackemeier said.

Original story stated that a survey was sent to the students, but it was parents who were surveyed.
