Update on Puerto Rico
October 19, 2017
Back in September, Puerto Rico faced a huge drawback from the world. Hurricane Maria tore through the whole island and knocking power out everywhere. Most people didn’t know how to react and are still in the process of recovering today.
Luckily donations have been pouring in everywhere. Organizations all over America and the world have opened their doors to help. Donations have been flooding in, supporting the people in crisis. But this nightmare isn’t over yet. They also have a lot of food and clean drinking water issues to deal with.
One of the major things that Google has come forth with is the Google Loon Project. It proposes the idea to make cellular data possible again. The basic plan is that they are going to be releasing balloons over high altitude that have signals for cellular data. This will help the people in Puerto Rico contact some of their friends and family, some of which they haven’t seen or heard from in weeks. The only problem with this is figuring out how many balloons need to be launched to cover the entire island.
The devastation that category 4 Hurricane Maria caused was just too much for them to handle by themselves. Even though Puerto Rico is not part of the United States of America, it is still American territory and all of the people that live there have the same rights that we do.
As of now, over four dozen deaths have been accounted for and people will have to continue the battle between sickness and health. Some health officials are worried that the numbers of infections are going to start increasing more due to people drinking contaminated water. Which is why it is extremely important that medical help is getting to them right away. And while health officials are doing their best to get medical supplies there quickly, it’s not a fast process.
President Trump is not helping in the slightest. He called out Puerto Rico for already being in debt before the storm and that they were in bad shape before hurricane Maria ever tore through the island. The citizens of Puerto Rico are of course shocked and scared for what’s going to happen next.
