Kansas 24
February 10, 2017
Saturday, February 11, 2017, the girls at the McPherson High School competing in wrestling will make history. Not only will the Mac girls be a part of this, but every girl competing in the first ever Kansas 24 all girls state tournament. Beginning at 9 am all girls competing while be wrestling to be the best girl in the state of Kansas. There are several very important people who will be at the high school, including Wrestle Like a Girl administration, and US Olympic Women’s coaches. For the McPherson High School and for all girls wrestling, this tournament will make history and go down as the first ever all girls state tournament.
For the McPherson High School this is the year with the most girls participating in wrestling, a total of 12. All of which have been competing, and waiting for this tournament. The main objective of the girls state tournament is to get as many girls to participate in a varsity competition as well as showing KSHAA that girls wrestling is growing more and more, and needing to be a sanctioned sport.
Janae Spaich, first year wrestler, says at first she was nervous to come out due to the fact of wrestling boys, but now with all the girl’s tournaments it has showed that there are many girls wanting to wrestle an equal opponent.
Another reason this tournament is so important is while there is a proposal for girls wrestling, there needs to be 24 teams that support and agree with girls wrestling being a sanctioned sport. Even though that is no guarantee to get the proposal approved, it is a start.
