What is Wrong (Or Maybe Right) With Us?
October 20, 2016
The moon landing was faked. Beyonce and Britney Spears are clones. Government officials are stone-cold reptiles. Now, what do these three sentences have in common? For most people, the correlation is that all three of these are statements that have been heard, and maybe even mocked when they’re mentioned. We’ve all heard these outlandish conspiracy theories, and a majority of us tend to ridicule them easily. I mean, isn’t it hard to say you believe that fluoride in water is put in for the communists to control our minds with a straight face? Yet, no matter how crazy these ideas may seem, we can’t shake them. So, what is our obsession with conspiracy theories about?
The most unnerving part of these concepts is the proof that believers have found to support their claims. Staying up and watching well-made videos will have anyone convinced that Elvis is alive and kicking, maybe somewhere working for the DEA. There’s just something about conspiracy theories that has us begging to be convinced they’re true. Maybe it’s just the dystopian scene set in every blockbuster that has us doubting higher authority- how did anyone not see President Snow coming, after all? Or, maybe it runs a little deeper than that. We made it without government or a system to protect us for a long time. Paranoia is a saving instinct, so are we all leaning on our survival instincts, even when there’s nothing threatening nearby? Is there actually more going on behind the scenes? I think we all know that there’s more going on behind the curtains while we’re attuned to the stage, the question is how important that hidden stuff really is. No one gets mad at the people running the lights, but they do get mad at the people lip-syncing to the tune playing backstage.
Are we just projecting our fears onto the nearest faces that everyone can see? Maybe. Conspiracies and political fear were practically created for each other, honestly. No matter what the suggestion is, every theory is a new, creative way of tackling something. Whether the merit is deserved or not, we love our conspiracy theories. So, what’s the harm in fantasizing that tin-foil can save us from brainwashing waves? There is none- create on, theorist because we are ready to consider all possibilities of our existence.
