The Dawg Pound is Open!

McPherson High School’s library coffee shop may be no longer, but the staff has come up with another solution to keep students satisfied. The MHS new school store, the Dawg Pound, has been open for roughly three weeks, offering snacks to its pupils.

Amy Plackemeier, the Business Essentials and Entrepreneurship teacher, got the ball rolling with the Dawg Pound. Plackemeier set up the store and keeps it staffed and running.

“I knew of other high schools that had school stores and wanted to bring that experience to the students at MHS,” she said.

The store is open during passing periods from first hour through fourth, with students maintaining it. In order to be part of running the Dawg Pound, students must have taken or be taking either Business Essentials or Entrepreneurship. If that requirement is met, students must also complete an application and be interviewed once they’ve applied.

“The store allows business students to have real-world experiences with business operations, entrepreneurship, marketing, inventory, cash exchanges and sales,” said Plackemeier.

The profits from the store will go to support MHS and the McPherson community in general. With the profits, equipment and other essentials can be bought to improve the store even more. The Dawg Pound will also be putting money towards a small scholarship for seniors working the store, and ten percent of all money made will go to a McPherson-based charity.

“Our biggest seller right now is the S’mores cocoa and French Vanilla Cappuccino,” said Plackemeier. “We also sell a lot of beef jerky. We have many different drinks to choose from including several flavors of diet soda and energy drinks.”

The options available through the Dawg Pound are varied, and likely to adjust based on popular demand and requests. Currently, the store is offering a special deal that gives customers free popcorn with any purchases on Fridays.

“We will have more drink options and snack items to choose from in the future as we continue to grow. We are also open to suggestions for items that our customers would like to see us offer,” said Plackemeier.
