The McPherson Girls Varsity Wrestling team kicks off their season on Thursday with a win over the Mulvane Wildcats, scoring 64-18. Heading into the weekend, on Saturday, the girl’s Wrestling team had a very successful tournament here in McPherson.
Senior, Lexi Patterson places 1st in the home tournament, Alix Wilson, Sydney Cummins, Clarea Williams, and Emily Reno place 6th, Molly Owen and Nahla Sechler place 5th, Amara Dosset, Heidi Fairchild, Mercedes Ladwig, and Brooklyn Kutina place 4th. They placed 6th out of 15 teams, getting 115.0 points.
A typical practice for the Girl’s Wrestling team consists of warm-ups, follow drills, pummel pass post, live conditioning, and a five-minute run at the end of practice.
Patterson says “It’s pretty hot and humid in the room but there’s always good music,”
Although wrestling is a very competitive and hard sport, Patterson and Owen shared some of their favorite things they like about wrestling
“It teaches me to trust the process and believe in what I can’t see. It gives me confidence in myself that I wouldn’t have had without wrestling,” said Patterson
“My favorite part about wrestling is getting to hangout with the team, its fun supporting each other, and getting to win matches,” said Owen
Patterson shared some advice for any underclassmen who are currently wrestling,
“It doesn’t matter who is out there, they put their singlet straps on the same way you did, go out and wrestle your match, not theirs, and to K.I.S.S (keep it simple, stupid). Make sure you go out there and compete what you practice,”
The team will compete this week vs. Salina South at Salina South Highschool on Thursday, December 12th.
