The supposed purpose of spirit week is to get students excited for upcoming events, yet it can be easily observed that barely anyone even participates. Really, the only times of the year you can dress up to school, you’d rather dress normally? Why is that the case?
Upon discussion, the staff believes that lack of participation stems from both uninteresting themes and potential embarrassment. The themes are basic at best, and some of them have even been repeats from previous years. Recent years, at that, not even several school years back.
A solution for themes could easily be asking students what they would actually like for spirit week. Perhaps sending out a survey towards the beginning of each semester, asking students what themes they’d like to see. Participant feedback is one of the most important factors in event planning.
Aside from bad themes, there’s the embarrassment of participating when no one else is. It singles you out in the worst way. Nobody is a fan of such situations. So, people just don’t participate to avoid that chance. After all, why risk it when not participating is always an option?
Essentially, students just have no interest, and they’d rather not embarrass themselves by participating alone. It can be fun at times, sure, but if no one’s enjoying it, then what’s the point? At this point, there seems to be none, and perhaps it’s better that way.
