Kansas was the 34th state that officially entered the Union, On Jan. 29, 1861. Kansas day is a day to celebrate the anniversary of the admission to the Union.
The Kansas Government celebrates the 162nd birthday of Kansas. L.G.A Copley, a teacher in Paola, started Kansas Day in 1877. Kansas’ name comes from the Kansa Native American tribe and that means “People of the South Wind.”
Kansas’ state animal is a Buffalo and Ornate Box Turtle, the state bird is a Western meadowlark, the state insect is the honey bee, and the state flower is a wild sunflower.
When people celebrate Kansas day, normally it will include going on school field trips, projects to study the history, certain meals, etc.
Most elementary schools do things like making cakes or decorating cookies, coloring, drawing, word search, flip books, and just more little activities to help them better understand and learn the history of Kansas Day, while also having fun.
