Greg McGlynn is the director of “Miracle Worker”. He has been directing for 12 years at McPherson High School, but this will be his last year directing there. McGlynn said that the reason he chose this play is because he loves the story, loves true life stories, and comes from a family that is deaf.
“Miracle Worker” is about Hellen Keller. She is deaf and blind and has a hard time communicating to people. This is until Annie Sullivan decides she wants to help Hellen. She teaches Hellen how to sign to communicate with people.
The Thespian Troupe has 15 students in the cast of “Miracle Worker”. They’ve been rehearsing this show since the start of August. According to the cast, the hardest part of “Miracle Worker” was building the set. It is a two-story building and took about 5 weeks to complete.
McGlynn said that his favorite part that brings him to tears everytime was the water pump scene. This scene shows Keller finally being able to sign to communicate with people.
Something that McGlynn wanted to share was, “The Opera House was brand new in 1888 and that’s when “Miracle Worker “was being written when the opera house was getting built.”
Layla Rank is Hellen Keller in Miracle Worker. She stated that the hardest part of being Keller is she can’t talk or make eye contact with the audience and has to rely on people to move her around. She also said that being Keller has been an absolute treat. She said this is her favorite role yet that she has been able to do at McPherson high-school.
