Why This Style is Making a Comeback
December 10, 2018
Popular amongst teens today, we are seeing a return of 90’s fashion; there’s a rise of popularity of leather jackets, dungarees, “mom jeans”, round glasses, denim skirts, Doc Martens, chokers, scrunchies, high waisted jeans, and retro neon colors. Where are they coming from? Thrift stores! The trend became popular last year when YouTube creators started bringing the style back, and made “thrifting” a trendy activity. Many people caught on, including me! The most fun part of the style is that everything you get is “retro” and “unique.” Teens are finding these clothes at thrift stores and consignment stores, which means when you find something old and retro, there’s a good chance you won’t see is anywhere else.
Why do people like thrifting so much? Well, it’s cheap! You can find anything fun, gifts, good quality clothes, furniture, and other things that could be of high value for very reasonable prices. You can go to your local thrift/ consignment store and get a very trendy outfit for under ten dollars, that you most-likely won’t see or find anywhere else!
Another reason people love to thrift is because it’s a creative way of self-expression. You will see a huge variety of clothes that you won’t find anywhere else! There are reasonably-priced clothes of all colors, styles, recent decades, sizes, and it’s up to you to pick around and choose. If you go weekly, you’re bound to find something new!
Not only that, but a large amount of the time, your money is given to charitable donations! More than 87% of the collective revenue from the sale of donated goods at Goodwill organizations supports and grows their critical community-based programs and services. Also, when you’re thrifting you’re not increasing the demand for more production! It benefits you money-wise, as well as the community and economy! The average annual revenue of thrift stores has increased by 7% in the past year, and there’s tons of reasons why!
Junior Sally Boese said, “I go thrifting because there’s a wide variety of clothes for really cheap. You can always find different stuff that’s affordable!”. Which is very true! You’re always bound to find something new! Junior Autumn Allen said, “I love thrifting because I can find cheap clothes that are my style that no one else will be wearing. The whole thrifting experience is kind of therapeutic, I can buy whatever I want and usually only spend around 20 bucks max”, and Here in McPherson, you can try out the local consignment store, Save N Share, or The Hidden Closet. Next time you go shopping, think about trying out something different and more affordable!
