Affection or Gifts?

Sally Boese, Staff Writer

Are the nicest things always the most money? People are expensive, and bills can really add up, especially if you’re regularly going on dates or wanting to spoil your significant other with gifts. But is giving love better than giving gifts? It’s easy to go overboard on extravagant dates, but the truth is, all the money isn’t what makes the date memorable, it’s the things you do to make it that way. When I asked 82 people, 70 said they would prefer private time over a public venue. Five dollars can go a long way when planning something simple for your partner, and the memories can be priceless.

It may feel like there’s not a lot to do in a small town, especially on a small budget, but McPherson may surprise you. I have discovered a variety of things to do in Mac for five dollars or less. Going to a movie may seem fun and simple, but costs nearly twenty dollars for two, without snacks. Instead, you could rent a Redbox movie from Dillon’s, buy a few dollar treats, and spend the day at home with your loved one. This is very affordable, and can easily take the place of an expensive movie, in the comfort of your own home.

Another quick option is to go for a walk. McPherson has lovely parks and venues, that are totally free to the public. If you want to be a little extra, however, it’s super easy to pack up a picnic and have a simple date. Or, you can change the location and take a walk downtown to window shop, go through a bookstore, or stop at a coffee shop for a drink! Especially in this perfect autumn weather, walking around lakeside and feeding the ducks can be romantic and refreshing!

McPherson also participates in a worldwide scavenger hunt called Geocaching, and is an great way to get outside and have fun. If you simply look up the website, it takes you to a list of places where items or clues are hidden, and you can drive around to discover them. This is interactive and can be an adventure, and a lot of fun with your partner.
