The McPherson High School Cheer team is off to a great start for their 25-26 cheer season. They are now on week seven of cheering at Friday night football games. From cheering to stunting to dances, these cheerleaders always have something new to show off to the fans of the McPherson Bullpups.
Although a lot of people don’t believe cheerleading is a sport, Freshman Cheerleader Taylin Thompson says otherwise. Thompson stated “I believe it is a sport because it isn’t just pom poms and smiles. It’s strength, stamina, and teamwork!”
The MHS cheer team participated in lots of events and camps over the summer to prepare for their season. In June, they attended two summer camps. This included a UCA (United Cheerleading Association) Stunt Camp where they learned all new stunting material for their season. Two UCA instructors came all the way to McPherson Middle School to teach them this material.
The next week some of the MHS cheerleaders hit the road to Great Bend and Dodge City to attend the Kansas Shrine Bowl Cheer Camp. This was a great experience for them where they learned many cheers, a dance, a band chant, and got to cheer at the Shrine Bowl.
Cheerleaders Tylee Wilson and McKenna Christiansen got chosen to be a part of 36 Select Team members, where they got to perform another special routine before the Shrine Bowl football game.
After all the craziness of summer camps, season prep, performances, and more the team has shown up to every game ready to cheer. They have shown up with so much amazing material to watch this year.
The team has lots of bonding experiences to come closer as a team. Thompson said, “Sometimes we all like to get ready together at one of the cheerleaders houses and it is lots of fun!” They aren’t just a team, they’re also a family.
This Friday, October 10th, Go cheer on your MHS Football team with the cheerleaders in Mulvane!
