Local indie jazz band Robby and the J Dawgs have decided to split after about half a year together. The band, originally made up of four McPherson High School students, played at multiple events, including shows at the Opera House and the Plaza.
“Our drummer decided he was leaving for college,” said Reeve Mai, the bass player for the band. “Our sax player left too, he just wasn’t having fun anymore.”
Mai said it was a mutual decision, and that it was just time to part ways. They played their last show on September 23, a small time corporate event.
“It was a client dinner for a wealth management company,” said the band frontman R.J. McDonald. “It wasn’t the most fun, but they gave us free food and money.”
In spite of Robby and the J Dawgs breaking up, Mai and McDonald actively participate in a different band. Deluge, a progressive rock band with surf influences, which they joined earlier in the year.
“I really like what we’re doing in Deluge,” McDonald said. “It’s just way more serious, it’s better quality too. I’ll miss the band but I’m looking forward to the future.”
You can go see Deluge live October 11 at 5:30 p.m. at Lakeside, and again a week later on October 18 at 8:30 p.m. at the American Legion.
