Wicked is an untold story of the witches of Oz and the unlikely friendship between the popular and privileged Galinda and the misunderstood young woman with unique green skin, Elphaba Thropp, played by Cynthia Ervio.
Wicked will be released in two parts, one part being released Nov 22, 2024, while the second part will be released in 2025.
In Wicked, Grammy-winning pop sensation Ariana Grande brings her vocal talent to the young witch’s musical role, by playing Galinda Upland.
Upland befriends a shy, lonely girl named Elphaba after they meet as students at Shiz University. Upland is the complete opposite of Thropp. “Everyone thinks she’s pretty, she comes from a wealthy family, and yet she forms an unlikely friendship with Elphaba that has sweeping implications for the musical’s bigger story” according to NBC Insider.
According to a student at McPherson High School, Tylee Wilson said, “I am super excited to see this movie!”
In London, the first screening of Wicked was shown on November 18, and the reactions have been very positive and uplifting.
In an interview with Grande with the Sentimental Men podcast, she responds to fans who are doubting her casting. The star admitted that she had felt “initial nervousness” and “might be able to deliver or not deliver” and considering that she is “wrong” for this part.
According to NME News, Nate Richard wrote “I was not looking forward to Wicked. I’m not typically a fan at all of Ariana Grande. I walked in thinking I’d be proven right. I was wrong. What a fantastic movie. Cynthia Ervio and Ariana Grande are phenomenal. The ultimate crowd-please of 2024. I’m not joking.”
