On November 1, 2024, the McPherson High School band concluded their marching season with their annual ‘Glow Show.’ Under the administration of Kyle Unruh, and directed by Florence Hall, Layla Rank, and Jordyn Gawith, the band celebrated a successful season of marching by commemorating their achievements with this special event.
Ava Clark, a sophomore at MHS, and an experienced band member, as well as her family members, have been involved in the band for years. Clark’s brother graduated in 2023 and also participated in the annual Glow Show during his time at MHS.
Clark has been a dedicated band member for several years, participating in various aspects of the program, including marching band, concert band, pep band, and jazz ensemble. Her family supports her by attending all music events, and Clark can always count on them to cheer her on from the stands.
The Glow Show is a vital tradition that energizes band families throughout McPherson County, effectively inspiring countless students to participate in the McPherson High School marching program. Clark, with years of band experience, is fully dedicated to continuing her musical journey and excelling throughout her high school career.
Clark has deep pride for the band, recognizing the significant dedication and effort demonstrated by her peers over the years. She particularly commends the students who participate in the Glow Show, acknowledging current performers and alumni for their commitment to excellence.
The Glow Show represents a significant achievement for the band students, akin to a victory lap. The ensemble earned a rating of I at their performance at Baker College and received a rating of I at the Kansas State University “Central States Marching Band Festival.” MHS is recognized for its commitment to excellence in the fine arts program, and Clark is confident that the institution will continue to excel in this area.
During the game, the MHS band departed the stands to initiate their annual black-to-neon transformation. Each year, the band members carefully attach glow sticks to themselves and their instruments, creating a vibrant visual effect. This preparation process is particularly meaningful for the students, as noted by Clark, who names it her favorite part of the Glow Show. It provides an opportunity for band members to bond and share enjoyable moments together before concluding the marching band season for 2024.
Participating in band challenges students physically and mentally, as they endure hot summer temperatures and chilly fall conditions. Many students experience relief upon completing their Glow Show, knowing they have achieved a successful season and no longer need to concern themselves with arriving at school early or attending late sectionals on Monday nights. Clark said, “I was definitely feeling relief because we don’t have morning practices anymore–and I think it was a really good season for us to go out on for all of us.”
