McPherson Girls Golf has been quite successful the past years. As for this season, the Pups are currently ranked 4th, trailing behind Wellington, Wamego, and Topeka Hayden. In the 2024 season, the Pups set a new school record for team score, and are shooting for State.
In the last season for the Lady Pups, (now junior) Brodie Kuhn earned Class 4A First Team All State Honors, (now senior), Reese Elliott earned Class 4A All State Honorable Mention, and (now junior) Andi Buschbom was awarded Second Team All League Honors.
After achieving League recognition Buschbom says “ After finding out I received league honors I jumped up and down and I was so happy”
Through many years of golf, Buschbom claims her father, Jason Buschbom who also is a big golf enjoyer, inspired her to play. As for the past year, Buschbom has undergone lots of training and hard work and her next goal is making it to state.
The Lady Pups Hosted their annual home Varsity Invitational at McPherson’s Turkey Creek Golf Course. While having the home advantage the girls took 6th out of 14 teams. Kuhn took 5th and Buschbom took 11th.
When asked what training looks like, Buschbom claims, “ At practice we play holes at the range, and lots of chipping and putting”
The most recent tournament for the Varsity Pups in Cheney ended in a first place finish, a hole in one, and a new school record. As for the Junior Varsity Pups’ Scramble in Hutchinson. Junior Leah Cahoone and Sophomore Tylee Wilson placed 1st.
When mentally preparing for an important shot, Wilson says “I take deep breaths, it helps me focus and get in the zone for my shot”.
Wilson has a history of placing high in the tournaments she plays in. As for Varsity girls, Buschbom and Kuhn both place in the top 10 in almost every tournament. Buschbom is currently 4th in class 4a scoring average with a 78.75, along with a 3rd place finish at the 2023 state preview.
When asked what their favorite memory playing golf is, Buschbom and Wilson respond “Bus rides to away tournaments”
After losing the 2024 seniors, the Pups have some ground to recover, but based on their results so far, The Pups definitely have a chance at making State again this year.
