               Racist Sports Logos, Names?

With sports being such a big role in everyday lives, questions have been raised about names and logos such as the Cleveland Indians. Long time fans are becoming upset over the protests while others join the wagon of change. “When we as a society cease to offend one another we then conform to the oppression of others and therefore find freedom of expression as taboo in our culture,” said Isaiah Schmidt, senior.

Recently, the longtime Cleveland Indians have declared they will remove the Chief Wahoo logo because of the cultural meaning to it. Fans are upset because of the personal attachment, but it is in fact a victory for cultural activists. The Cleveland Indians have been around since 1915. Chief Wahoo was not used for the team until 1947, but various forms of the logo were made dating back to 1928.

With that being said, Max Kellerman has pronounced that the Indians’ decision will have a domino effect. Currently, there is a controversy over NFL’s Washington Redskins. Cases have been made against the team, but the Redskins have been successful in court. There are many other teams with “racist names” such as: Kansas City Chiefs, Atlanta Braves, Chicago Blackhawks, and San Diego State University Aztecs. Time will only tell if changes will be made.
