Older generations and people know a lot of important skills like how to knit or how to vote. They have a lot of stories of their past and things that they have gone through. It’s hard to say that a younger generation can teach an older generation anything. After all they have just barely went through life. However there are things that a younger generation can teach an older one. But before we go into what a younger generation can teach the older people, let’s see what the older generations have taught us so far.

Older generations:

  • Morals
It’s no secret that our parents have taught us everything that we know, including what we hold dear, our morals. You know what is right from what is wrong. From always holding the door open for someone who’s hands are full, to learning how not to kill someone just because they ate the last piece of pizza (We still struggle with that). Your parents learned from their parents who learned from their parents who learned from… yeah you get the point, on what’s right and wrong.
  • Life Plan
Older generations have an idea of which priorities are important. They can help us plan our financial issues and give us advice about friends. Somethings people only learn through old age and we are lucky that they can share their wisdom. Older people tend to see the world in a different light. They know what to cherish, like family or friends.

We are human. The more you know the more you really don’t know. No matter how old you are you could always learn more, whether it’s technology or a reminder to have an open mind. The younger generations want to help older people by reminding them of the times when they didn’t walk the path of life.

Younger generations:

  • Technology
Technology. You either love it or hate it. The younger generations have the world at our fingertips, literally. With just a click of a button, one could know anything. Many older people argue that technology makes people into zombies. However, when turning on my Iphone I don’t crave brains, although I do crave chocolate and Cheetos (does that count?). Technology is GOOD. Powerschool, paying bills, and weather apps are all uses of technology. Honestly, it shouldn’t get as much hate as it does. The younger generations can definitely teach older people how to use it.
  • Open Mindedness
Same-sex marriages, plus size models, women’s rights, and gender identification are more accepted now than they ever were. Mental health awareness has taken more leaps in this generation than in the past. In this year more than 25% of college students have a diagnosable mental illness. Racial diversity is more apparent now than it has ever been. To sum it all up in the nicest way possible, the younger generations are more accepting of the LGBTQI+ community, more aware of mental health and how big an issue is, and more aware of the racial and gender divide.

It is important to encourage the younger one to do better than your generation did. With that in mind younger generations are not “lazy” and “tech-obsessed” or “have it easy”. In fact they are learning how to go through life just like their successors. Every generation has problems that don’t need to be dismissed be
