A majority of girls take P.E. their first year in high school. One of the main reasons they take it early is to get it over with so they don’t have to deal with taking in in the future. Especially when they have other electives they plan on taking when they have the chance later on. For example, some classes have a prerequisite, and if you den’t get credit for that you can’t take the class you’re really interested. P.E. is a required class to graduate, but if you complete it there are more physical classes that become availible to you.

In some students’ opinion, P.E. is not the most fun elective class. It all revolves around the effort you put into it- whether  you dress out, and how you do on physical tests. You get tested on things like how many push ups or crunches  you can do in a minute. One of the required tests is the half-mile. Girls have to run five laps around the roundhouse in three minutes and thirty seconds to get an A while the boys have to run five laps in three minutes or less. Every minute longer than those times is a letter grade lower.

There are 289 boys and 225 girls taking a P.E. as an elective this year.

“I’m doing P.E. my first semester because I wanted to get it over with so I can do electives I want to do later in my high school career,” said Abbey Yianakopulos. This is a common reason why most girls take P.E. their freshman year. Of course there are other reasons, such as they like P.E. or they like the teacher. P.E. is mostly filled with freshmen and girls simply because they don’t want to have to take it later on in their high school career and just don’t like it. Might as well get over with, right?
