Arts Department

Here at MHS students have a wide selection of art classes to choose from. These classes only require one semester of basic Art 1. The teachers for the art programs are very passionate about what they teach, in hopes to make the arts more enjoyable.

These Art classes include Art 1, Painting, Drawing, Glass Forming, Sculpture, Jewelry, Ceramics, Photography, Printmaking, Design, AP Art History, AP Studio Art.

Mrs.Schoenwetter shared how she became an art teacher, “I have a psychology degree and after I got married my husband was getting his masters at K-State, so while he was working towards this goal, I was working at an elementary school in Manhattan.

“I wanted to teach high school because I think high schoolers can go farther in depth,” says Miss Hall.

While working at this school, I had to decide that I liked working with kids. So, when we moved to McPherson, I decided to back to school and received my art degree. I student taught at Lincoln elementary and at Smokey Valley.”

We asked MHS art teachers, Miss Hall and Mrs. Schoenwetter what made them want to start teaching; both expressed how they wanted to share their love of art with others. Some of the challenges they face are discipline, keeping the students on task and grading. “Grading art can be so subjective” said Mrs. Schoenwetter.  Not only do the teachers love teaching art as a whole. They also have their personal favorites. Miss. Hall’s being sculpture and glass forming.

Despite the challenges the art staff may face, the students here at MHS are the reason why the teachers enjoy coming to work and teaching and interacting with students everyday.
