On March 22, McPherson High School’s National Honor Society helped host a Dr. Seuss event in honor of his birthday that was earlier in the month. Students helped kids make crafts and go through an obstacle course.

“All the kids were smiling and they seemed to be having a lot of fun which was really fun for us to watch,” senior Katie Wurm said.

The event was hosted at the 4H building, and ran from 5:30 to 7:00. NHS members decorated the building with balloons and decorative Truffula Trees, which are mentioned in The Lorax.

“I spent about two hours making the Truffula Trees,” senior Janae McKinney said. “I thought the crafts were very creative and was amazed by the amount of kids that showed up for the event. It was great to see so many kids celebrating Dr. Seuss.”

Students put together crafts for the event over spring break. The crafts included the trees, cutting out shapes to make Cat In The Hat masks, and cutting out fish bowls for children to draw in.

“I think the kids had a lot of fun with the crafts that we set up,” senior Lindsey Moore said. “Every kid I saw had a smile on their face and looked like they were having a good time at the event.”

The event was set up in stations based on the books. Some of the stations included Green Eggs and Ham, The Cat In The Hat and One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish.

“Watching how much fun the kids were having with each other was the best part,” Wurm said.

NHS plans to continue doing the event in future years.
